Where to find human rights resources for Asia Pacific

Compiled by the OHCHR Representative for Asia Pacific as at August 2003

The UN human rights system in Asia-Pacific:

Bangkok E- Bulletin: The UN and Human Rights in Asia-Pacific

This monthly electronic bulletin is aimed at our contacts in Asia-Pacific, among NGOs, governments, development cooperation agencies, and UN agencies. It provides information about the UN human rights system relevant to Asia-Pacific, such as concluding observations by treaty bodies on states in Asia-Pacific, visits to the region by thematic experts and statements by the High Commissioner. It uses hyperlinks to take readers to the full story or document.

During the Commission on Human Rights we produce regular special editions of the Bangkok Bulletin which aim to demystify the Commission. These special editions have focused on reports, statements and resolutions of particular importance to the Asia-Pacific region.

The Bangkok Bulletin can be found at www.un.or.th/ohchr/news.htm

Asia-Pacific Ratification of UN Human Rights Treaties

This table lists all ratifications of the core UN human rights treaties by states in Asia-Pacific, broken down into sub-regions. It collates information from the official UN ratification site http://untreaty.un.org. The table will be updated every three months.

The Table can be found at www.un.or.th/ohchr/System/ratifications.pdf

Asia-Pacific Treaty Bodies Table

This table tracks the reporting of Asia-Pacific states to the six treaty bodies. It also tracks treaty body examinations of country reports. The table, which is organised both by country and treaty body, contains hyperlinks to all reports and concluding observations available in the global Treaty Bodies Database. The table is a complete historic record of treaty body reporting and examinations.

The Table can be found at www.un.or.th/ohchr/System/Tbtable.pdf

Asia-Pacific Commission on Human Rights Experts Table

Both the public and internal version of this table tracks visits and reports of country and thematic mechanisms to Asia-Pacific countries since 1993. The table is organised both by country and by mechanisms. Hyperlinks to the reports of the mechanisms and to the press release announcing an official visit are included in the table.

The table can be found at www.un.or.th/ohchr/System/experts_table_public.pdf

A human rights approach to development:

Practitioners' Forum on Human Rights in Development

The Practitioners' Forum on Human Rights in Development meets quarterly to discuss the human rights approach to development. The Forum is made up of around forty development practitioners from UN agencies, NGOs and development cooperation agencies. Thus far the Forum has discussed issues such as poverty reduction strategies, organizational change, practical experiences and lessons learned from rights-based projects. The Forum not only draws on experiences of practitioners but also aims to increase awareness of a human rights approach to development throughout the region. The Forum is now developing to include practitioners based throughout the region through an e-conferencing network and national level roundtables. The Forum is also identifying projects in the region that have used a rights-based approach from which lessons can be learned.

More information on the Forum can be found at www.un.or.th/ohchr/issues/rba/rba.htm

Resources Database on Rights-based Approach to Development for Development Practitioners in Asia-Pacific

This Database contains details of a wide variety of resources related to rights-based approaches. The database includes training manuals, policy papers, programming guidelines, bibliographies, fact sheets, discussion papers and assessment tools and covers sectors such as health, children, humanitarian assistance, education, poverty and many more. The resources included have been developed by UN agencies, NGOs and development cooperation agencies. While many of the resources are global in nature some focus on specific countries and regions.
