SEMINAR AND WORKSHOP GOAL AND OBJECTIVES
Goal and objectives. The seminar and demonstration workshop will provide forums for
intensive exchanges of knowledge and experience in promoting awareness, planning and
developing accessible ICT solutions in the context of sustainable and equitable
development for present and future generations.
1. Meeting goal
The seminar and demonstration workshop aim to further equalization of opportunities in
social life and development for persons with disabilities through promotion of accessible
information and telecommunication technologies (ICT) and digital connections with special
attention directed to interested Governments of least developed countries, low income
countries and countries with economies in transition.
2. Immediate objectives
The seminar and demonstration workshop will provide a forum for the exchange of
knowledge and national experiences in promotion of accessible ICT in a broad human rights
framework and with reference to development policy options, structures and technologies:
- Participants will review and discuss issues and trends in accessible ICT policies,
structures and technologies, promotion of equalization of opportunities for persons with
disabilities in selected least developed countries, low income countries and countries
with economies in transition and identify priorities to further accessible digital
connections for all in support of implementation of the Millennium Development Goals.
- Participants will formulate a strategic planning framework for accessible ICT for all
with special reference to least developed countries, low-income countries and countries
with economies in transition.
- On the basis of the seminar and demonstration workshop experience, participants - and
other interested parties - will establish networks of excellence, with emphasis of full
and effective involvement of persons with disabilities, to promote awareness and build
national capacities and institutions for accessible ICT and digital connections for all in
order to further implement the Millennium Development Goals in the context of rights-based
approaches to development represented in General Assembly resolution 56/168.
- Participants will identify priorities for technical co-operation for accessible ICT in
cooperation with concerned members of the United Nations system, among other sources, with
special reference to measures which promote and ensure the full and effective
participation of persons with disabilities, particularly in least developed countries, low
income countries and countries with economies in transition.
Ends and means. The objectives of the seminar and demonstration
workshop will be pursued by the following activities:
- An intensive interregional seminar on accessible ICT and regional demonstration workshop
on Internet accessibility and persons with disabilities will be supported by a
special-purpose Internet site, established and supported by an international presentation
team, to provide background information and a forum for online exchanges.
- Meeting participants will review and discuss selected national experience in ICT and
development and approaches to promoting accessible ICT and digital connections to enable
full and effective participation and equality of persons with disabilities in social life
and development.
- Participants will develop findings and recommendations and formulate a strategic
framework, with emphasis on the context, organization and content for further action
related promoting reasonable levels of accessible ICT and digital connections for all in
support of the Millennium Development Goals in the context of rights-based approaches to
development as recognized in General Assembly resolution 56/168.
- The project team will prepare a report of findings on the results and outcome of the
inter-regional seminar and regional demonstration workshop on accessible ICT and persons
with disabilities and make this available to concerned intergovernmental fora.
- The project team will disseminate widely the findings, recommendations and outcome
document of the inter-regional seminar and regional demonstration workshop to facilitate
open and democratic dialogue and follow up and creation of networks of excellence.
- Follow up could include public information activities to promote awareness and support
for accessible ICT and development and implications for advancement of persons with
disabilities in the context of rights-based approaches to development.
