Robert L. Metts is an Associate Professor of Economics serving on the Economics faculty of the University of Nevada Reno, and the Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of the Disability Policy and Planning Institute (DPPI). His research and teaching specialties are in economic development and international economics, and his work with DPPI is in the area of disability and development.
Dr. Metts is widely regarded as one of the foremost authorities on disability and development. He has over 20 years of professional and academic experience in the fields of Economic Development and Disability Policy. Since 1990 he has specialized in disability issues in developing countries, designing and evaluating disability related development programs and projects for most major bilateral and multilateral development agencies, and publishing important scholarly articles in the field. Dr. Metts has recently consulted with the World Bank to develop a conceptual framework for comprehensive integrated disability strategies, and co founded an institute, DPPI, to assist governments, development organizations and NGOs to develop policies, strategies and programs compatible with that framework.
Dr. Metts has also conducted archival research into the socioeconomic impacts of colonial economic systems, and conducted field and theoretical research into the social and economic impacts of food aid on recipient countries, with particular emphasis on food aid monetization programs.
