- All use descriptors on the site itself
- Some use whole text
You need to include material in your site that they will pick up

Search engines are automatic methods of scanning the Internet for information. There are many, mostly now commercial. They either use keywords (or what are called metatags) embedded in sites that indicate the subject matter, or they read the text of the pages. Some search engines, like Yahoo, create indices of sites after review. If you are lucky, they will include you. Otherwise, you have to be sure that the metatags, and the text in your home page, accurately describe what you are doing.
