An ASEAN Perspective

Organization

The Secretariat of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Sub-Committee on Microelectronics and Information Technology (SCMIT), in co-operation with the National Institute of Development Administration of Thailand (NIDA) will organise at Bangkok a Seminar on Internet Accessibility - an ASEAN Perspective from 12 to 16 July 1999. SCMIT and NIDA will be assisted substantively by the Division for Social Policy and Development of the United Nations Secretariat in collaboration with the Social Development Division of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific.

Seminar venue

The Seminar will be held on the modern campus of the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), which is located at Klong Chan, Bangkapi Bangkok 10240 (Thailand). NIDA have identified the office of Dr. SUCHITRA Punyaratabandhu, Special Adviser to the President of NIDA, as the focal point for Seminar preparations: facsimile (++66 2) 374 4413. The chairman of the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Microelectronics and Information Technology (SCMIT) is Mr. Dennis Wong, Superintendent Engineer, Department of Electrical Services, Ministry of Development, Bandar Seri Bagawan 2061 (Brunei Darussalam): facsimile (++673 2) 382271 or 382090.

Method of Delivery

The working language of the Seminar is the ASEAN working language: English. The seminar will meet for five days, 12-16 July 1999, at Bangkok. Seminar hours are 9:30am to 5:30pm on Monday the 12th, 8:30am to 4:00pm on Tuesday through Thursday, and 8:30am to 1:00pm on Friday.

The seminar will include: (1) lecture-conferences and distance collaboration sessions, using available Internet-based communication and meeting applications; (2) individual and group workshops, supervised practical sessions related to key aspects of Internet accessibility; and (3) participant presentations to exchange experiences and views.

Participant profile

The seminar focusses on issues and trends in information policies, structures and technologies, and implications for capacity building and localisation of the design and development of accessible Internet services by, for and with persons with disabilities. The seminar will take stock of the current situation, identify priorities and formulate a strategic outline to promote Internet accessibility in a self-reliance and cost-effective manner among ASEAN member States. It is envisaged that participants nominated by ASEAN member States will either be specialists concerned with analysis, planning and development of information policies or for development of specific programmes; academics undertaking policy research, evaluation and training related to information technologies and structures; or planners and managers in the media, information and telecommunications fields.

Registration procedures

Participants nominated by ASEAN member States kindly will complete the registration pro forma attached to their invitation and return it by facsimile to SCMIT and repeat for information and appropriate follow up to NIDA.

Participant travel

Travel arrangements and local accommodation of participants nominated for the Seminar are being handled by the Siam Landmark Company Limited on behalf of NIDA and the ASEAN Secretariat. Siam Landmark will contact nominated participants from the lists provided by the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Microelectronics and Information Technology in consultation with NIDA. Travel and related expenses of nominated participants is being co-financed by a grant from the United Nations Voluntary Fund on Disability to the Seminar.
