Internet Accessibility - an ASEAN Perspective
Seminar purposeThe Seminar will provide a forum for representatives of each ASEAN member State to review and discuss: (1) issues and trends in information policies, structures and technologies, (2) implications of trends in information and communication services for Internet accessibility and persons with disabilities from an ASEAN perspective, and (3) options for building national capacities and localising skills and technologies for Internet accessibility among ASEAN member States. Participants will have opportunities to identify priorities for action and formulate an outline for a "strategic planning framework" to promote Internet accessibility for all. As a result of the seminar it is expected that fellows will obtain new knowledge of international information policies, structures and technologies, will develop critical analytical skills to assess information issues and trends from an ASEAN perspective and will gain new understanding of Internet accessibility for all as both policy objective and technical standard. The seminar represents an ASEAN-wide response to United Nations General Assembly resolution 52/82 (Implementation of the World Programme of Action concerning Disabled Persons; towards a society for all in the twenty-first century), operative paragraph four, which identifies accessibility as the priority action to equalise opportunities by, for and with persons with disabilities. Seminar results also will contribute to further implement the development objectives of the Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons (1993-2002). |
