Considering Web Accessibility
in Web Design
Presented by Leo Valdes
Vision Office, North Vancouver, BC, Canada
The tremendous growth of the Internet has resulted in the availability of millions of
Web pages to a global audience. This presentation examines the challenge of designing
appealing and accessible Web pages. Considerations in meeting established Web
accessibility standards are explored through new developments in Web technology.
Five areas are considered in the design of a web site. Most web
sites designers put emphasis on aesthetics and cutting-edge usability, unaware of how
these compromise the accessibility and sustainability of the site. It is not surprising
that less than a quarter of the world's web sites are useful to persons with disabilities,
seniors and modem users. The most important message of this presentation is actually the
simplest: Know your audience.
