UN ESCAP/CDPF Regional Workshop on Promotion of Barrier-free Tourism
Sanya City, Hainan Island, China
30 October - 1 November 2006
Sanya
Declaration on Accessible Tourism in Asia and the Pacific
Barrier-free tourism (BFT) offers a new opportunity for the tourism
industry to reach untapped markets, such as persons with disabilities and
older persons. BFT also creates employment opportunities and more accessible
physical environments. Not only will the promotion of BFT benefit
communities within the Asia Pacific Region. It will also allow persons with
disabilities to enjoy the freedom of mobility, social participation, and
economic returns.
This workshop will bring together the players from the disability and policy
sectors, the tourism sectors and the consumers, to discuss good and best
practices on promoting BFT. It relates to two priority areas of the "Biwako
Millennium Framework for Action towards an Inclusive, Barrier-free and
Rights-based Society for Persons with Disabilities in Asia and the Pacific
(BMF)":
- Access to built environments and public transport,
and
- Access to information and communications, including
information, communication and assistive technologies.
The goal, at the end of the workshop, is for the participants to:
- provide inputs to the BMF Plus Five
- make recommendations on the promotion of barrier-free tourism in a
joint statement, and
- build a plan of action for each country or area.
