The China Disabled Persons' Federation, in cooperation with UNESCAP's Population and Social Integration Section, Emerging Social Issues Division has organized this Field Study cum Regional Workshop as a follow-up to a Regional Workshop on Poverty Alleviation of Persons with Disabilities held at Lanzhou, Gansu Province, China in 25-29 October 2004

This regional workshop aims to build capacities and increase participation of disabled persons and grassroots self-help groups of persons with disabilities in decision-making and development at the community level.

It targets policy-makers and planners of self-help groups, NGOs, local governments and other relevant organizations concerned with the empowerment of disability groups in local communities in Asian countries, such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Philippines, Thailand, Timor Leste and Viet Nam.

The outcome of this workshop will be beneficial for UNESCAP members and associate members in the formulation of national policy on disability, in particular, to meet priority areas 1 and. 7 of the Biwako Millennium Framework, namely "self-help organizations of persons with disabilities" and “poverty alleviation through capacity building of persons with disabilities and through social security”, respectively.
