Regional Figures on Disability Prevalence

Prevalence of disabled persons in Asian and Pacific countries in per cent. Ranges from 0.5 to 19.5 per cent.

Regional figures on disability poverty

  • 3.9 billion people in the region(UNESCAP).
  • 800million persons in the region live under poverty, 20 % of which has a disability (World Bank).
  • 400 million PWDs live in the region, 40 % of which live in poverty (World Bank).---most in rural areas.
  • 160 million PWDs live in poverty in the region.

Regional figures on disability poverty

  • Less than 10% of children and youth with disabilities have access to any form of education ( compared to 70% of non-disabled) (BMF)
  • 515 million Asians are chronically undernourished (FAO)

National Reality

Sri Lanka

(GDP per capita ppp US$3,570, HPI rank 36)

  • • Population below income poverty line-- under $1 a day is 6.6 %, and 45.3 % under US$ 2 a day (HDR 2004).
    • Physically disabled population below income poverty line –a household income under US $1 a day is 50%, under US $2 a day is 89%, personal income under US $1 a day is 45% and under $2 is 87% (Social Research Study 2003 in Sri Lanka).

  • National unemployment rate: 10%
    (90% employed)
  • 1 % for adults with intellectual disabilities, employed
  • 26 % for adults with physical disabilities, employed
  • 98 % of deaf employed earn less than US$2.

  • International Workshop on Raising Disability Awareness of Public Administration Personnel to Promote Disabled Persons' Inclusion in Development Process (Bangkok, March 2003).
  • Regional Workshop on Monitoring the Implementation of the (BMF) (Bangkok, October 2004)-indicator development.
