The opening session will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday 27 May 2003 at the UN House in Beirut. Representatives of Arab countries, civil society and non-governmental organizations concerned with disability issues, United Nations bodies and specialized agencies, and universities, will attend the meeting along with experts in their personal capacity and persons with disabilities. The main objective of conference is to further the equalization of opportunities for persons with disabilities social life and development, through discussing 3 main issues as follows: 1. Designing and developing the content and structure of a new instrument (convention) to promote the rights of persons with disabilities in Arab countries 2. Reviewing existing national policies and developmental programmes in Arab countries, in light of rights based approaches to development 3. Reviewing existing national policies and developmental programmes that contribute to strengthened national and institutional capacities to promote and empower the rights of disabled persons and further disability mainstreaming in the social, political, and economic development |
