Seminar on Accessibility for AllUnited Nations, New York May 6, 1999 The Accessibility 1998 project wound up with a seminar on Accessibility for All at United Nations Headquarters. It was attended by government delegates, United Nations staff and representatives of non-governmental organizations. |

The seminar was opened by H.E. Mr. Felipe Mabilangan, Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines. Ambassador Mabilangan's statement stressed the importance of accessibility in designing the Internet. John Langmore, Director of the United Nations Division for Social Policy and Development and Sarbuland Khan, Director of the Division for ECOSOC Support and Coordination emphasized the importance of making the Internet available to all. | ||

On behalf of AIMS, María Cristina Sará-Serrano, President, provided an overview of why the Internet needed to be accessible and what was needed to make it accessible. | ||

Four presentations of experiences in the project were made. Charles Kuhlman of New York University dealt with issues and trends in Internet technologies. | ||

John Mathiason of AIMS presented global Internet policy issues, including the need to revise international normative standards to reflect the need for accessibility in the Internet. | ||

Matt Bonham of Syracuse University outlined the experience in the project on distance collaboration and suggested new directions. | ||

Leo Valdes of Vision Office Support Services discussed strategies for making Internet sites accessible. | ||

The presentation concluded with a summary by Clinton Rapley of the United Nations Division for Social Policy and Development of lessons learned and a discussion of aspects of accessibility in which a several attendees participated. |
